I feel this way because…._____________. What does Freedom mean to Americans? Be prepared to share your answer aloud when called on and add your sticky note to the class chart. APK: We will be focusing this year on the central question: “What does freedom mean to Americans?” Pair-Share what freedom means to YOU. Then, discuss which idea stands out most. Write your best idea on the sticky note I provided to you. LO: Students will be able to define basic vocabulary and concepts about America preceding 1 the founding of the nation. 2 1 preceding: before 2 founding of the nation: the official start of a country.

2 8 th Grade U.S.History Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014-15 2 Concept Development: America began as a colony 3 of England and its people were called colonists. Over 3,000 miles separates America from England. (England is often called Britain and its people British.) All in all 13 original colonies made up America and belonged to England (Britain), and were ruled by a king, King George III. These colonies are sometimes divided by historians into 3 groups: New England: (the northern colonies): Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire The Middle Colonies: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware. The Southern Colonies: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. 3 colony:: a new area ruled by another country from far away. King George III Think/Pair/Share: Recall from last year that England is in what continent? Point to it on the map. Point to America, also. Think/Pair/Share: Which country controlled America? Use the word “colony” when you answer.

3 8 th Grade U.S.History Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014-15 3 Concept Development: People traveled from Europe to live in America for many different reasons: 1. Religious Freedom: You may recall that the pilgrims came to America on the Mayflower for this reason. 2. New life / Own land: Many people sought freedom to own their own property. Traditionally, 2 nd or 3 rd sons in a family in Europe did not inherit 4 any land. 3. Forced into slavery: Recall from our studies of the Age of Exploration that Europeans had begun transporting African slaves to the New World. A, B, and C are all true. D is incorrect, because they were not escaping slavery, but rather being forced into it. 4 inherit: to receive in a will after someone dies.
