Over 3,000 miles separates America from England. (England is often called Britain and its people British.) All in all 13 original colonies made up America and belonged to England (Britain), and were ruled by a king, King George III. These colonies are sometimes divided by historians into 3 groups: New England: (the northern colonies): Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire The Middle Colonies: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware. The Southern Colonies: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. 3 colony:: a new area ruled by another country from far away. Religious Freedom: You may recall that the pilgrims came to America on the Mayflower for this reason. 2. New life / Own land: Many people sought freedom to own their own property.
