WBS 1.04 Scope Design, fabricate, deliver to KEK and test the barrel KLM scintillator readout modules for layers 0 and 1. Specify, procure, implement and commission the high voltage power supplies for the barrel and endcap KLM scintillator modules. Performance Requirements (1) Performance requirements: – Identify muons with efficiency of 90% or higher and an impurity of 10% or less for momenta above 1 GeV/c. – Detect K L mesons with a momentum-dependent efficiency up to 70% with an angular resolution of 2° or less. – Reject neutron background at a rate of up to 100 Hz/cm 2. Performance Requirements (2) Design specifications: – Each assembled scintillator strip (including WLS fiber, photosensor, and preamplifier) provides a signal corresponding to at least 15 pixels for the passage of a cosmic ray muon through the far (mirrored) end of the scintillator – Each assembled scintillator strip has a timing resolution of <10 ns – Each phi-view scintillator strip plane has an active coverage of >95% – Each z-view scintillator strip plane has an active coverage of >92% – Each pair of planes has a joint active coverage of >92% Minimum functional requirement (per detector module): – Overall module detection efficiency of 80% within its fiducial surface area, averaged over all scintillators strips, measured using externally triggered cosmic rays 16-17 January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)5

Risks Initial elicitation completed in June 2012 Major risks: – Project does not receive US-Japan funding in August 2012 as planned, delaying procurement of scintillators, photosensors and preamps. (Cost) – Barrel costs more than estimated and must be procured using DOE funding rather than US-Japan funding.
