The Trans- Atlantic Slave Trade Main Idea Between the 1500s and the 1800s millions of Africans were captured, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, and sold as slaves in the Americas.

Beginnings European colonies provided a demand for African slaves Native populations were declining due to over-work and European diseases Planters needed workers for their growing plantations The slave trade became a major part of the colonial economy African Slaves Origins of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade By the time of European exploration, slavery was already practiced in West Africa. African tribes often forced others into slavery if they were defeated in war.

Triangular Trade Network Captured Africans became part of network called the Triangular Trade First leg: Ships carrying European goods to Africa to be exchanged for slaves Second leg: Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, brought slaves to the Americas to be sold Third leg: Carried American raw materials and cash crops to Europe
