Quick introduction to the initiative, tool or system StatBase for SWIO region is a statistical database centralizing statistical tables provided by SWIOFC countries focal points StatBase as a tool is to provide statistical information for resource managers, scientists, sector professional and general public StatBase is maintained by the Kenyan Marine Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) in Mombasa, Kenya Coverage: Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius, Comores, France (La Reunion), Madagascar Main actions carried out: data processing / data dissemination / data analysis Is a project / A program? – was a subproject of the SWIOFP Presently no funding Regional Data Policy Workshop – Rome, Italy – 28 th -29 th of May 2015

Approaches/methods/systems/tools Description of the approach(es) / methods – Statbase is Web based – It is hosted in the iMarine server – iMarine is Data e-Infrastructure Initiative for Fisheries Management and Conservation of Marine Living Resources (http://www.i-marine.eu/)http://www.i-marine.eu/ – StatBase is developed on server and servlets engines (Tomcat, Java, PostgreSQL) – libraries/framework used (Struts 2, JqPlot, Jquery – tools for management, development and deployment of the java application, such as eclipse, SVN and Maven – A private/public key of iMarine account for server’s maintenance, installation on a local machine Regional Data Policy Workshop – Rome, Italy – 28 th -29 th of May 2015

Approaches/methods/systems/tools Considerations on Data Harmonization and Standards SWIOFP Nomenclature was adopted from FAO codes and used for standardizing the data accuracy A macro enabled excel spreadsheet was developed for: FAO vessel codes Vessel Horsepower Vessel length Vessel tonnage Gear codes Presevation Country codes Species categories FAO Statistical zones Regional Data Policy Workshop – Rome, Italy – 28 th -29 th of May 2015

Highlights of data policy and strategies What are the data sharing and access policies of your initiative? Data access status, e.g. – Full Open data Data sharing, e.g. – All data are available to everybody (free access) Data accessibility (Policy implementation), e.g. – Data accessible on-line in (xls) Regional Data Policy Workshop – Rome, Italy – 28 th -29 th of May 2015
14
Issues faced – challenges – lessons learned Describe here issues or challenges faced regarding information and data in the course of the project (related to data quality, availability, metadata, policies etc…). Timeliness of data – each country have there own data release frequencies and so uniformity in data currency is hard to achieve What is industrial fishery in one country is semi-industrial fishery in another country (terminology) Lessons learned during the initiative implementation Working group sessions were most helpful for data input as every-one comes prepared for a 1 week exercise Take away assignments were the worst performed Thus it is important to identify funding for regional data processing and input workshops Regional Data Policy Workshop – Rome, Italy – 28 th -29 th of May 2015
