Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe NA5 Kick-off Meeting September 2004 2 Introduction to NA5 at CERN Administration: –Matti Heikkurinen is the PEB contact and the activity leader –Hannelore is responsible for NA5 administrative support and dissemination –Both also do work within the IT communications team, which benefits from their "non-standard" backgrounds –Roberta Faggian is the section leader at CERN in the EGEE group responsible for EGEE collaboration with related projects (Deisa, SEE-GRID, Diligent…) CERN NA5 activities –eIRG support and relations to other projects Services: –administrative contact point to/from NA5 and a "marketing department“ –to make the work of the NA5 team known in much wider scope than just EU- Grid circles

Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe NA5 Kick-off Meeting September 2004 3 Structures and Role of NA5 Structures: NA5 will act as a –Coordinator –Support structure –Messenger –Facilitator in the above interactions NA5 team members should –try to understand different points of view –report these new points of view to the project management Reporting should also happen past the official channels: i.e. documents & meeting minutes This is important, since NA1 needs to have some estimates about who are new key people and organizations, what they want, how they react to different approaches etc..

Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe NA5 Kick-off Meeting September 2004 4 EU’s Goal and Long-Term View On the infrastructure level, EU's goal on the infrastructure level: –users of the Grid and the EU itself do not have to know anything about the software the Grid service is based on –NA5 is funded by the EU to support this vision NA5 members –are naturally inclined to promote EGEE, but should still be seen as being as impartial as possible –should concentrate on promoting collaborative and organizational aspects of the EGEE, especially towards projects that may be seen or see themselves as competitors of EGEE. Long-term view –if there is a contact with an entity willing to contribute resources that could run software on EGEE by 2006, we should refer them to NA4

Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe NA5 Kick-off Meeting September 2004 5 NA5 Success criteria NA5 main success criteria are: –Successful evolution of eIRG activity and related “White papers” –Facilitating consolidation of standardization and roadmap activities (e.g. hosting meetings of several groups) –Common roadmap with Deisa and other related projects –When necessary, starting new collaboration activities, e.g. based on bilateral agreements about work aiming at interoperability beyond 2006 with other projects –NA5 should establish a "due diligence procedure“ to make sure that it does not duplicate work elsewhere. Only thing worse than having no standardization effort is having two parallel and competing standardization efforts...
