Scientific Notation Rules RULE #1: A number is expressed in scientific notation when it is in the form a x 10 n (where a is between 1 and 10 and n is an integer) RULE #2: A positive exponent shows that the decimal point is shifted that number of places to the right. A negative exponent shows that the decimal point is shifted that number of places to the left.

Scientific Notation Rules RULE #3: To add/subtract in scientific notation, the exponents must first be the same. If they are different, you must move the decimal either right or left so that they will have the same exponent. For each move of the decimal to the right you have to add -1 to the exponent. For each move of the decimal to the left you have to add +1 to the exponent. RULE #4: To multiply, find the product of the numbers, then add the exponents. RULE #5: To divide, find the quotient of the number and subtract the exponents.
