“ Bones ” The Human Skeleton Nick fact: There are approximately 206 bones in the human body.

The Skull The human skull is one of the most important bones of the body. Nick fact: The human skull is a bony structure, part of the skeleton, that is in the human head and which supports the structures of the face and forms a cavity for the brain.

Torso The torso is armor for the organs and heart. Nick fact: The torso, is a bony and cartilaginous structure which surrounds the chest and supports the shoulders, forming a core portion of the human skeleton.

Arms Our arms help us extend to and reach different things. Nick fact: The human arm contains 30 bones, joints, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Many of these muscles are used for everyday tasks.

Hands The hands are important for everyday use. They help us grab and lift things. Nick fact: Each hand is dominantly controlled by the opposing brain hemisphere, so that handedness, or the preferred hand choice for single-handed activities such as writing with a pen, reflects individual brain functioning.

Fingers The fingers help us with the sense of touch. Nick fact: A finger is an appendage found on the hands of humans.

Hips Our hips help us turn or rotate our body. Nick fact: The hip joints are the most important part in retaining balance.

Legs The legs are also for everyday use. Nick fact: Legs are used for standing, walking, jumping, running, kicking, and similar activities, and constitute a significant portion of a person's mass.

Feet Our feet help us to balance, walk, and run. Nick fact: The human foot and ankle is a strong and complex mechanical structure containing more than 26 bones, 33 joints (20 of which are actively articulated), and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Toes Most people have 5 toes on each foot. Nick fact: The toes assist the human while walking, providing balance, weight-bearing, and thrust during the gait.

Summary As we learned this year in health class, all 206 bones in our bodies are very important, and each have a certain job to do. Some of them help us to move, some work in conjunction with other bones, while others protect our organs. These are reasons why our bones are very important to our bodies.
