Update on Recent Issues Expansion of Police Jurisdictions –This issue was identified by members and board as a priority for this quadrennium –Legislation passed in 2015 to alter reporting of changes in Police Jurisdiction lines and to allow the changes to take affect only on January 1 of each year

10. www.alabamacounties.org Update on Recent Issues Expansion of Police Jurisdictions –Senate Bill 218 Passed during the 2016 Session –Negotiations over this legislation were extensive and, at times, very frustrating –Focus for counties was the movement of police jurisdictions without public knowledge and the exercise of police jurisdictions on so-called “island” or “noncontiguous” properties

11. www.alabamacounties.org Update on Recent Issues Expansion of Police Jurisdictions –SB 218 was passed on last day of session with an immediate effective date –The changes represent a step forward but the Association anticipates that the Legislature will consider additional issues with police jurisdictions in the coming sessions

12. www.alabamacounties.org Update on Recent Issues Expansion of Police Jurisdictions –Annexation no longer automatically moves the police jurisdiction lines. There must be an “affirmative vote of the municipal governing body” to adjust the police jurisdiction lines during annexation process
