1. Goals of the course –tools for writing a book 2. Overview of publishing industry 3. Why a health book is different 4. Classic mistakes of a first-time author 5. #1 way to be successful- write for your readers 6. 3 Questions to ask yourself 7. How to get the most from this course

1. Reader profile: create your avatar 1. Book plan: what do you want this book to do for your practice/business? 2. Write your book title & subtitle 3. Write your back cover copy

 Your reader is not “everyone”  Even the Bible & Harry Potter are not for “everyone”

 Start with your current clients/patients: 1. What are the most common questions? 2. What are the most common problems? 3. What trends or patterns do you see?

 Give your reader a name  Envision your reader  (eg. Google images: search for “middle age people”)  Write directly to your avatar

Start a conversation to:  Build your authority and credibility  Get clients/patients  Sell physical products (eg supplements)  Sell a course around your book  Spread your message  Get a publishing contract  Generate leads for your website  Get interviews on TV, radio, podcasts  Sell at back of the room  Revenue stream from sales

 What is the most important message you want your book to deliver?  Write it in one sentence: (example)  “I want my book to give hope to people with chronic back pain, and concrete steps they can take to get rid of their pain.”

What’s your transformational promise? Where will take your reader?  The title & subtitle have to work together. The subtitle usually amplifies the title.

 This is what sells the book!  Can be in the title, subtitle, or both places  The more specific, the better

These titles are intriguing, but don’t really tell you what the book is about. The subtitle has to do that.

The goal is to get people to open the book! (in e-books, use this in your book description) 1. State who this book is for 2. Be provocative, arouse curiosity, ask questions 3. Give benefits 4. Use bullet points 5. State the author’s credentials (briefly) 6. Include testimonials (brief & punchy) 7. Break up the space with color, white space
