What is the European Union and why is it important to Europeans? Economic cooperation between European countries is achieved through the European Union. Many European countries now have a common currency and trade restrictions are fewer.

Why is Europe a continent and not just a smaller part of Eurasia? The cultures of Asia and Europe are quite different. Studying them separately makes them easier to understand.

Islam is the most wide-spread religion in the Middle East today, so would be most important to the people who live there.

AFRICA The Sahara keeps North Africa separated from Southern Africa. The rainforest provides many natural resources. Slavery continues in Africa today.

Only a few in Africa have access to education. This is evident in their low literacy rates. Africa was easy for Europeans to colonize. They used Africa for raw materials and a market for finished goods.

Europeans did not treat Africans as equals. When Africans gained independence, they did not know how to manage government or industry. Civil Wars + Unstable Governments = Bad investment risk.

The equator runs almost through the center of Africa making parts of the continent dry and hot, or tropical and wet.

SOUTH ASIA The Caste System is a Hindu practice that keeps people in the social class they were born into. Siddhartha Gautama began Buddhism in India in 560 BC. Missionaries spread the belief to the rest of Asia. Gandhi led a non-violent movement to gain Indian independence.

EAST AND SOUTHEAST ASIA Japan has a high literacy rate and a high standard of living. The most populated countries in the world are: China, India, USA, Indonesia, and Brazil. The two largest countries in the world by population are China and India. The main diet of the people of Asia is rice.

CONVICT It’s kind of like being on extreme suspension. A person found guilty of a crime; a prison inmate serving a long sentence. The British sent convicts to be the first settlers in Australia.

Antarctica This continent is larger than the United States and Mexico combined. Keeping the environment in Antarctic safe is a major concern. Antarctica has been set aside as a a reserve dedicated to peace and science. Little exploration for oil or fishing takes place around Antarctica.
