24 1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 2 Cor. 8:1-5 “First gave their own selves to the Lord”—exceeded normal expectation

25 3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. 2 Cor. 8:1-5 “First gave their own selves to the Lord”—exceeded normal expectation

26 III. How Should We Give? A. Measured by Spirit of Love for God 2 Cor. 9:6-10 Bring in heart, then in hand

27 6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. 2 Cor. 9:6-10 Bring in heart, then in hand

28 8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: 9 (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. 10 Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) 2 Cor. 9:6-10 Bring in heart, then in hand

29 III. How Should We Give? A. Measured by Spirit of Love for God Lk. 21:1-4 Widow gave her heart, sacrificed “more than they all”

30 1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. 3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all : 4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. 38 38 III. How Should We Give? E. Whatever We Give, Let Us Determine to Grow! Jn. 3:16 God’s perfect love: gave plan, sacrifice, & revelation of salvation! 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

39 III. How Should We Give? E. Whatever We Give, Let Us Determine to Grow! 1 Thess. 1:8 What the church can do to spread the gospel to a lost world: Limited or expanded by our giving! 8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

40 III. How Should We Give? E. Whatever We Give, Let Us Determine to Grow! 2 Cor. 8:7 Set individual & church goals: grow “in this grace also” 7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

41 III. How Should We Give? F. Our Giving: Rob God (Mal. 3:8) OR Lay Up Treasures in Heaven (Matt.6:19-21)? 8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

42 F. Our Giving: Rob God (Mal. 3:8) OR Lay Up Treasures in Heaven (Matt.6:19-21)? 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
