Formation of Colony William Penn received a large grant of land from the royal family of England as payment for the debt the royal family owed his father. (1681)

Inhabitants and Motivation Quakers- motivation was to escape religious persecution in England Germans and Scots-Irish Penn hired people and published notices in Europe promising religious/political freedom and generous land terms

Structure of Society Colonial council made of tax paying landowners Council had power to make laws and administrate the government There was a governor that could veto any laws Women were equal to men

Environmental Factors Fertile soil- allowed raising of livestock and growing crops Many rivers Mountain ranges Forests Lots of minerals in soil
