From Hire to Promotion What Everyone Should Know About Faculty Appointments Faculty Affairs and Development (FAD) Executive Dean’s Office School of Medicine November 18, 2015

Tracks, Ranks, Domains, and Career-Levels All faculty members are appointed to a specific Track when hired (e.g. tenure track, research track) Within each Track, there are Ranks (titles) given according to the individual’s experience (e.g. Assistant Professor) For each Track and Rank, there are different expectations for research, teaching and service activities. We refer to these three areas as Domains. To be promoted, we expect you to reach a specific Career- Level of achievement in each Domain.

Tracks Modified Title Tracks –Research Track, Clinical Track and Educator Track. –Faculty ranks are modified with Research, Clinical or Education (i.e. Research Associate Professor). –Faculty on these tracks are hired to focus exclusively in one of the three domains. Unmodified Title Tracks –Tenure Track, Clinical Scholar Track and Affiliate Track. –Unmodified faculty rank (i.e. Associate Professor). –Faculty on these tracks are expected to focus on two of the three domains.

Ranks (Titles) Faculty Ranks Instructor Assistant Professor Associate Professor Professor Ranks - Modified Tracks The modifiers are Research, Clinical or Education for each rank. For example, someone hired on the Research Track, will be a Research Assistant Professor. Ranks - Unmodified Tracks These faculty do not have modifiers for their ranks and are simply Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor.

The Three Academic Domains 1. Teaching Examples include: –Lectures (didactic) –PBL’s or Small Groups (non-didactic) –Clinical –Mentoring (students, residents, post docs, junior faculty) –Journal Club facilitator –Creating educational materials/tools –Developing new courses –Directing a module

Service Clinical Patient care (RVU’s) Other service University, hospital, departmental Committees Local, Regional, or National Committees Study Sections (NIH) Journal Reviewer Community Educational Programs School of Medicine Committees Department Committees Academic Societies (Murphy, Delp, Major, etc.)

The Three Academic Domains 3. Research and Scholarship Examples include: Clinical Trials Grant Funding Published Papers Books and Book Chapters Posters, Presentations, and Abstracts Invited Lectures Interviews on Expertise Patents

Career-Levels Within Each Domain Early Career Active participation Mid-Career Leadership Innovation Local/Regional Recognition Established Career Expert in Field Impact on a National Level National/International Recognition

Wait! How do they all fit together? Example for a Tenure Track faculty member: –Hired as an Assistant Professor (Track/Rank) Qualifications include degree (MD or PhD) and residency or post doc program completed. –Promotion to Associate Professor with Tenure (Domains/Career Levels) Only track with a timeline. Mandatory application for promotion/tenure at start of 6 th year at the University. Must be at Mid-Career Level in Teaching AND Research/Scholarship, plus Early Career Level in Service. Evidence of accomplishments that are above and beyond expected duties Trajectory toward the Professorial level.

Best Practices Keep your CV up to date. Save/Request teaching evaluations from all teaching opportunities. Save notifications from: Awards received Grant awards (with funding, all investigators, inclusive years) Acceptance of publications Invitations for committee involvement Invitations to present at conferences All abstracts, posters, publications, grant submissions (funded or not)

Best Practices Network Ask peers and senior faculty to review your CV frequently. Find and use a mentor(s). Make contacts at conferences – share your CV. Forming professional relationships with contacts will help when requesting references for promotion. Collaborate with others in your field from other institutions.
