Almost all parents have a computer in the house, even though a lot of them admit they don’t know where the power button is The 3 parents who have had a computer since very young (ages 10-15) have a university degree Out of all the computer users, most use it for social networking and emailing. A lot of other skills are missing though Shopping online is quite popular too Most view online banking suspiciously

I want him to learn and love school, so he will have a better life. I think technology will help my daughter become a better pupil. I am sure that having more technical knowledge will help my child find a better job when he grows up. All these computer games you’re teaching them are a waste of time. I don’t know what you are trying to teach because I can’t understand anything and all this is getting on my nerves. Please miss! I would really love to learn the computer. Can you teach us?

Experience tells us that whenever parents support their children, their learning experience is a fuller and more fullfilling one Children who make use of technology gain 9 percentage points over children who don’t have access to technology Topic 3

If I wanted this project to work, I had to work with the parents and make them work with me This could only be done if the parents had the basic skills and a knowledge/ appreciation of what the children were doing.

Was a nightmare. All the parents crammed in one classroom. Skills such as taking turns, talking when talked to, listening to others...were long lost Being adult made people a bit more impatient. If the tech didn’t work there and then, they would take it very badly

I decided to put my parents in smaller groups. I also decided to have the children accompany them during the sessions. This increased the self confidence of the parent and made them feel proud that their child can do wonderuful things on the computer. It made the children teach their parents (as if it was peer to peer) the skills learnt, in an informal, non-traditional classroom way.

A lot of them now want to enrol into extra classes and start looking for a job It is essential that along with imparting facts, that we inspire the ability and desire to learn.--Barbara Viniar Take Home Message:
