2 What are our Priorities? The Preparation of Pre-Service Teachers Advanced Training and Preparation of School Leaders PhD Programs That Develop Scholars and Practitioners Research Leading to Understanding and Social Progress Outreach to External Stakeholders

3 The Preparation of Pre-Service Teachers Our goal: The training of classroom teachers who demonstrate content area proficiency, professional behavior, civic responsibility, and respect for all students. Our responsibility: Continuing to develop, refine and deliver exemplary programs of instruction at the initial certification level.

4 Advanced Training and Preparation of School Leaders Our goal: The preparation of committed school leaders who will work with communities and leverage resources to improve the quality of education and community life for all children. Our responsibility: Continued offering of advanced programs for the preparation of school administrators and school guidance personnel that emphasize leadership skills, and the importance of collaborative relationships with local and state agencies.

5 PhD Programs that Train Scholars and Practitioners Our goal: Multiple, independently functioning, and sustainable doctoral programs in education that enhance our reputation as a national level research university, support the goals of our different emphasis areas, and together contribute to a culture of scholarship in the School of Education. Our responsibility: To recruit both nationally and within- state to identify potential candidates for our PhD programs, and to work together to provide our candidates the foundational, content-specific and advanced skills that will enable them to succeed in their chosen fields of research, teaching and practice.

6 Educational Research that Leads to Greater Understanding and Social Progress Our goal: Ongoing programs of research that will have a lasting impact on our fields of study; research that is collaborative, forward looking, and responsive to the individuals and institutions with whom we work. Our responsibility: Continuing to develop our skills and experiences as quantitative and qualitative researchers so that we are increasingly successful in securing funding and support for timely and innovative research; this will require collaboration within and across disciplines, mentoring and advising by senior faculty, and close cooperation between faculty and support staff.

7 Outreach to External Stakeholders Our goal: Sustained, formal relationships with state agencies and businesses in South Carolina that will enable us to engage collaboratively in research and service activities that address the needs of schools, families and communities in South Carolina. Our responsibility: Continuing to develop mutually beneficial relationships between the SOE and public schools in South Carolina; increased involvement between the SOE and government agencies at the local, state and national level; and expanded efforts to develop research and/or development partnerships between the SOE and business organizations in South Carolina.
