Target: I will be able to describe the responsibilities of parents and list at least 3 strategies for abstinence. Pg. 37 Responsibilities of Parenthood: 1.Provide basic needs Food, clothing, shelter, daycare, education, medical needs

2.Social and emotional needs- Teach morals and values, self-control, how to get along with other and how to solve problems 3.Set limits, rules, and good examples 4.Give discipline when necessary Act quickly and Be consistent Separate the behavior from the child Give lots of praise 5.Give them your time 6.Love them unconditionally

Implications of Teenage Pregnancy: Financial Burden Teens who do not have full-time employment may struggle to cover the basic expenses of life upon having a baby

Delayed Education and Goals Education may be put on hold while a teen is pregnancy and after the baby is born.

Neglect of the Baby… Teen parents: May not be willing or able to give their baby the undivided attention it needs. May not be able to be an adequate mother or father because they may feel overwhelmed by the constant needs of the baby. May get annoyed at the lack of freedom to interact with friends due to the baby

Abstinence: Refraining from (not participating in) sexual activity It is the only thing that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Strategies for Abstinence: Consider fully why abstinence is important to you and talk about it with your partner Be straightforward about the limits that you want to set- Abstinence can only work when both partners agree to it. Learn to say “no” clearly, especially in the difficult times, and mean it Keep in mind that having sex is not the only way two people can become close.

Know your priorities in life – they play a huge role in your sexual decision making Think about the consequences or impact on your life and future that having a child or STI would have. Summary:
