 9 September 2015  Objective: I understand how to create scientific question and test that questions.  Title: Water Splatter Lan

DNA THIS IS YOUR SCIENTIFIC QUESTION If you spill water while you are standing up, will it splatter more or less than when you are sitting?

Shape of Water Splatter versus Drop Height

Introduction: You are going to practice using the scientific method while investigating the effect of drop height on the size and shape of water droplet splatters when they land. We will change only one factor, the height of the drop. This is the Independent variable. All other factors or variables will be the same. These are the Control variables

Procedure: 1.As you follow the instructions in the lab, fill in the steps of the Scientific Method by writing what you do at each step: Before you start you need to prepare the data table

Drop Height Trial 1Trail 2Trail 3TotalAverageDescription 5 cm 10 cm 20 cm 40 cm 80 cm Diameter of Drop Splatters (mm)

a.State the Problem: b. Gather information: (What do you already know?) i. ii. iii. iv. c. Make a hypothesis:

D. Do the experiment. i.Place two drops of food color into a cup holding 50 mL of water. ii.Place the splatter paper on the desk. iii.Draw water into the dropper. iv.Measure the height listed in the Data Table using the meter stick. v.From each height drop three drops of water, one at a time, Move the paper each time to see and record each drop. Label each drop with its height and trial number. vi.After collecting all of the data, determine the average drop size for each height by adding the three trials and dividing by three vii.Repeat this for all the heights. Be sure to add a description of the drops viii.Graph the data from the data table.

Y axis List from 0 to 80 cm Title: Drop Height (cm) X axis label from 0 to 26 mm Title: Splatter Size (mm) Graph Title: Drop Height versus Splatter Size

e. On a sheet of paper answer these questions. You place this sheet below the graph. i.Write a conclusion ii.How does your conclusion compare to your hypothesis? iii.Describe two things (controls) that you had to do exactly the same for each trial to make sure you were as accurate as possible. iv.Explain why you think that measurements or descriptions are “best” for reporting scientific data. v.If you want to have a smaller are to clean up if you spill, should you pour your water from a height of two inches or two feet above the floor. Explain why you think so.
