2 WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF SHORT STORY?  CHARACTERS,SETTING,PLOT,  SOLUTION,AND CONFLICT

3 WHAT ARE CHARACTERS?  A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work.

4 WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CHARACTERS? Major or central characters are vital to the development and resolution of the conflict; also known as protagonist; the plot & resolution of conflict revolves around them. Minor characters serve to complement the major characters and help move the plot events forward; Antagonist.

5 WHAT IS SETTING? The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.

6 WHAT IS PLOT?  A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.

7 WHAT IS CONFLICT?  The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main character is usually on one side of the central conflict.

8 WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CONFLICT?  A common approach for this standard is to teach about the “Big Four” types of literary conflict: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Society, and Man vs. Self.

9 WHAT IS THEME?  The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story; the message, or moral of the story.
