Essential Questions How is theme developed in a short story? What conflict is present? What is the author’s purpose for telling the story? What does this mean for my own creative writing?

Literary Elements Literary elements are present in ALL pieces of fiction, both short and long We will be focusing on five: plot, setting, theme, characters, and conflict

Setting The time, place, physical details, and circumstances in which a story occurs.

Plot The selection and arrangement of incidents that shape the action and give the story a focus.

Characters A person responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story.

Conflict A struggle between two opposing characters or forces.

Theme A common thread or repeated idea that is incorporated throughout a story.
