2. Artist Research  Art Movement: Fauvism  Time Period: Early 20 th Century  Country/region: France  What the art movement was about: Fauvism is the style of vibrant colors mixed with unique brushstrokes to show the qualities of the picture in a different way.

3. Artist Research  Training: Matisse planned to be a lawyer, but realized that he wanted to be an antist instead. He attended the Academie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts. Matisse started painting abstract, colorful paintings which were the style of Fauvism.  Influences: Matisse started painting when his mother bought him art supplies when he was 20 years old.

Artist Research  Primary subject matter or theme that the artist painted: Matisse used a variety of of bold, vibrant colors to show features and details  Major visual characteristics of the artist’s painting style: Matisse’s uses bold colors, large amounts of paint, and speratic to give his artworks a bright, abstract appeal.  Themes and moods in the artist’s work: Aside from his abstract work, Matisse mainly painted human faces, figures, and still-life. Instead of using skin tones and realistic colors, he used vivid colors to give a feel of what the setting was actually like.

12. Completed Portrait vs. Inspiration Reflection: How does your self- portrait synthesize the artist’s work? My self-portrait synthesizes Matisse’s work by showing many details in my self- portrait that were used in Matisse’s artwork, Green Stripe such as somewhat using the same texture, brushstrokes, colors, and style.
