2. Elizabeth's Early Life ➲ Elizabeth was born in Greenwich Palace in the Chamber of Virgins on 7 September 1533. ➲ Elizabeth, who was 2 years, 8 months, old at the time, was declared illegitimate and deprived of the title of princess

3. Ascension to the Throne ➲ Elizabeth became queen at the age of 25. ➲ On 15 January 1559, Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey and anointed by the Catholic bishop of Carisle.

4. Foreign Policy ➲ Elizabeth treated the marriage issue as an aspect of foreign policy. Though she turned down Philip II's own offer in 1559, she negotiated for several years to marry his cousin Archduke Charles of Austria. ➲ Elizabeth's foreign policy was largely defensive. ➲ In 1585, she signed the Treaty of Nonsuch with the Dutch to block the Spanish threat to England. ➲ She knighted Francis Drake after his circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 to 1580, and he won fame for his raids on Spanish ports and fleets ➲ The Defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1558.

Economic Policies ➲ Elizabeth’s government enacted legislation known as the Poor Laws, which made every local parish responsible for its own poor, created workhouses, and severely punished homeless beggars. ➲ During Elizabeth’s reign, England expanded trade overseas and the merchant community grew. Private shipbuilding boomed and navigational advances made long sea voyages safer. ➲ In 1600 the government granted the English East India Company a monopoly to trade in Asia, Africa, and America.

6. Religious Impact on England ➲ Elizabeth was forced to accept the title of Supreme Governor of the Church of England rather than the more contentious title of Supreme Head, which many thought unacceptable for a woman to bear. ➲ She established the Acts of Supremacy, introduced the prayer book act of 1559, and the acts of uniformity.

7. Elizabeth's Legacy ➲ She was and still is the most popular English monarch ever. ➲ She brought England into the picture in Europe. ➲ She created a vast empire that touched all four corners of the earth. ➲ From what she did during her reign it made England the superpower of the world for 500 years.
