Presentation Structure 1.About HEAnet 2.Why a New HEAnet Strategy? 3.A New HEAnet Services Model 4.HEAnet Private Community Cloud Proposition 5.HEAnet Brokerage Activity
3
Who We Are HEAnet is Ireland’s National Research and Education Network Set up in 1983 as a collaborative body by the seven Universities and Dublin Institute of Technology Supported and funded by Government Became a non-profit, limited company in 1997 Connect all Universities and other publicly funded Higher Education Institutions, many research organisations, and approx. 4,000 schools
4
Why a New Strategy? New ways of Learning User choices Fiscal constraints Cloud & Mobility
6
NREN Strategic Challenges Continued migration of campus resources to public cloud Cloud resources are accessible without NREN connectivity (even when user is on campus!) Ubiquity of quality mobile access exacerbates these trends Consumerisation driving user sourcing of non-NREN and non-Campus services Financial constraints (for HEIs & students!) and NRENs remaining cost-effective
7
PUBLIC CLOUD PRIVATE NREN COMMUNITY CLOUD CAMPUS PRIVATE CLOUD Seamless connectivity (wired, WiFi, 4G) Seamless federated access (& SSO) Seamless roaming (eduroam) Brokerage (to public cloud services) Adding value in the Value Chain(s)
8
Strategic Plan 2014-2016 Continue to be the trusted provider of networking and infrastructure services Be the preferred broker of cloud and other services to our clients Be the driver of Identity Federation across the education & research sector and into the wider public service

Why the NREN? Private High-Quality Network Non-Profit Shared Ownership Trusted Managed Security (across all layers) Physical location Ease of Access & Audit Convergence & Standardisation End-to-End SLA Controlling the full value chain Community collaboration e.g.

17
Why Standardise? Convergence Economies of scale Multi-tenanted solutions Concentration of knowledge Minimise vendor lock-in Interoperability & Portability Examples: SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) OCCI (Open Cloud Computing Interface) GN3+ SA7 “Standards & Interoperability” also supports this approach
