Region and Area
3
The place occupied by a figure on a flat surface is called the region of that figure. Z P A B
4
U K If we observe regions U & K,It is difficult to decide which region is greater. To decide this,we must measure each of the two rectangular regions. The measure of a region is called the area of that region
5
U K The place occupied by the rectangle U is 10 square & rectangle K is 12 squares.
6
Unit of area 123 4 5678 9101112 A B C D The area of a square of side 1 cm, is called 1square centimetre. This 1 square cm is the unit of area. It is written as 1 sqcm. Thus, area of rectangle ABCD is 12 sqcm. or cm 2 Or cm 2
7
Graph Paper
8
Activity Place the matchbox on graph paper and draw its border. The area of the base of the matchbox is 6 sqcm.
9
Area of a rectangle Thus we observe that, the area of a rectangle is equal to the product of its length and breadth. The area of a rectangle = length X breadth
10
The length of a rectangular plot is 24 m and breadth is 13m.Find its area. Length of a rectangular plot = 24 m breadth = 13 m The area of a rectangular plot = length X breadth = 24 X 13 = 312 sqm. Area of a rectangular plot is 312 sqm.

Area of a Square Thus we observe that, the area of a square is equal to the product of its side. The area of a square = side X side
13
The side of a square sheet of paper is 25cm. Find its area. Side of a square sheet of paper = 25 cm The area of a square sheet of paper = side X side = 25 X 25 = 625 Area of a square sheet of paper is 625 sqcm.
