Atolla Jellyfish A deep sea bioluminescent creature By Edee Polyakovsky
2
Where does it live? The atolla wyvillei lives in deep oceans around the world. Scientists have videos of the atolla in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the Southwest Florida Shelf. It lives in the Bathypelagic or Midnight zone of the ocean (between 1000 to 4000 meters below the surface).
3
What does it look like? The atolla wyvillei has a reddish umbrella dome or bell that ranges from 6/10 to 8 inches in diameter. It has 20 long tentacles arranged around its rim for propelling itself through the water. And one even longer tentacle in its center for catching its prey and eating.
4
Bioluminescence Like many other deep sea creatures, the atolla jellyfish is bioluminescent, which means that it can produce its own light. Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction that takes place inside the organism, releasing light energy. Some other bioluminescent creatures are fireflies, glow worms, certain beetles and many fish including anglerfish.
