Basic Network Design GryphonTech Day 1
2
Brainstorm How do you communicate with someone else? What do you need to know, or have, to communicate with them?
3
Today’s Goal Know the parts in a computer network and how they work together to allow one computer to talk to another. We will first talk about networks connected by cables, and then look at how things change when we go to wireless networks.
4
What Can Go Wrong Start a “what can go wrong list” We will be going over this in a later lesson Let’s keep track of our ideas about what could go wrong while we learn about the parts of a computer network
5
Basic Parts – the Computer Computer – the part that runs applications
6
Basic Parts – the Cables Cables connect things together and carry the messages from one end of the cable to the other.
7
Basic Parts – the Hub Hub – the part that lets a computer talk to its neighbors
8
Basic Parts – the Switch A switch learns enough about the network to intelligently send packets to another port. It reduces traffic on the network.
9
Basic Parts – the Router Router – the part that lets a computer talk to computers that are not its neighbors
10
Basic Parts – putting them together
11
Build Your Own (BYO) - Computers On a large sheet of paper draw several computer that you have and want to use to send messages to another computer. Give each of them a name. Leave ¼ of the page empty for something else Coke machine. n.d. Custom Vending Company. Web. 7/1/2011.
12
BYO - Hub In the ¼ of the page you left empty, draw a hub Use cord to connect your computers to the hub. Use tape for the connectors. www.customvending.com/NewImages/coke- machjine.jpg
13
BYO - Switch For each table, on a piece of printer paper, draw one switch. Connect all the hubs at your table to the switch using cord and tape.
14
BYO - Router For each two tables, on a piece of printer paper, draw a router. Connect your switches to the router using cord and tape.
15
BYO – Connect the Networks Connect your router to at least one other router using cord and tape. Connect one of the routers to the Internet cloud.
16
What about Wireless Depends on where Personal Area Network (PAN) Bluetooth or infrared. Relatively short distance. LAN – radio waves, in homes and offices, set frequency. Home – LAN connects to Internet over cable or DSL
17
What about Wireless Office – LAN connects to Internet over fiber. WAN – Point to point microwave. Telephone – base, operations and support, switch.
18
Table Networks Each table take one large sheet of paper, and draw your own network. Then connect your network to the Internet.
19
Ticket Out – answer the following What device in the network does the most work? Why do you think that?
