President Washington George Washington was chosen as the 1st President. He created a group of advisors known as the Cabinet. Washington regularly met with this group to help him make decisions.

Alexander Hamilton was appointed the head of the Treasury Department, he developed a plan to help the US economy. The main point of his plan focused on the creation of a national bank.

Thomas Jefferson argued bitterly with Hamilton over the power of the government, leading to the first two political parties (Federalists and Democratic-Republicans).

1793, France and England go to war. Washington kept the US neutral and even signed a Treaty (Jay’s Treaty) with England settling some disputes left over from the Revolution.

After serving as President for 8 years, Washington decided to retire from public life; he would die two years later in 1799.
