4 14 th Annual GeoElections User Conference www.icwmaps.com ● Text Objects have no connection with the data in a map layer ● Text Objects change scale as one zooms in and out of the map ● Text Objects can be stored in a permanent Table. Their position in the layers can be controlled ● Text Objects can be created with the Text Tool from the Drawing Tool Bar ● Text Objects cannot be created as curved text ● Text Objects can be created from labels using either the AutoLabels or Label Functions tools ● Labels are derived from a column in a table or expression ● Labels can be displayed using Automatic Labels in Layer Control or by using the Label Tool ● Labels can follow the curve of a polyline object Key Differences Between Text and Labels

5 14 th Annual GeoElections User Conference www.icwmaps.com Annotating streets can be performed using one or both of the following to produce curved labels: The Automatic Labels setting accessible from Layer Control and the Lines group box from the Labeling Rules dialog box. 17 14 th Annual GeoElections User Conference www.icwmaps.com Following is a brief list of cartographic techniques for creating superior annotation: Always use a unique font style (type, size, color, etc.) for each feature class Attempt to be consistent with the orientation of the label to the object Lines = rotated or curved but adjacent Points = Horizontally oriented about the centroid Regions = Center mass or as a call out
