Communication : for Better or Worse It is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of any issue or object. Then you can form opinions and decide whether or not you like it, if you should use it, or if you should buy it. You should look at all the good and bad things and then make a final decision. People use modern methods of communication every day. There are both advantages and disadvantages of modern communication.

You will create the following: A PowerPoint presentation describing the advantages and disadvantages of one type of communication A speech to go along with your PowerPoint presentation

1. Choose one type of communication and make a list of the advantages and disadvantages. 2. Outline a PowerPoint presentation that explains the advantages and disadvantages of the method of communication. 3. Write a speech that will help you present your PowerPoint presentation to the class.  NOTE: If you wish to choose a type of communication not mentioned in the article “Communicating With the World,” you may research another form of communication. Refer to the PBL website for additional information. You will complete three steps:

Step 1: List the advantages and disadvantages.  Review the three kinds of communication described in “Communicating With the World.” Choose one type of communication for your project.  Use the chart on page 71 of the textbook to list the advantages and disadvantages of the type of communication you have chosen. Remember:  advantages are things that help people and make things better or easier  disadvantages are things that may hurt you or make life more difficult

Step 2: Outline your PowerPoint presentation. Use the information that you gathered in Step 1 to put together a PowerPoint presentation that shares the advantages and disadvantages of a type of communication. Complete the template on pages 72 – 75 of the textbook to help you organize your information. Your presentation should include the following: Slide 1: Title Slide Slides 2 – 4: Advantages – state and describe the advantages Slides 5 – 7: Disadvantages – state and describe the disadvantages Slide 8: Conclusion

Step 3: Write a speech. With all the information you have gathered, write a speech to share your information with an audience. Complete the template on page 76 of the textbook to help you write the words of your speech. Introduction: Grab the attention of your audience. State the type of communication you will be focusing on. Middle 1: Describe and give examples of the advantages. Middle 2: Describe and give examples the disadvantages. Conclusion: Describe whether or not you think it is a good idea to use this type of communication. Explain the reasons you have for your opinion.

Presentation Tips 1. Include images of the type of communication you have chosen. 2. Check each slide for spelling and grammar errors. 3. Try different fonts, colors, and text sizes to make each slide look attractive. 4. Make sure the text is readable. If your slides have a colored background, choose a contrasting text color so that your audience can read it. Also make sure the words are large enough to read.

Presentation Tips To prepare for your final presentation: 1. Write the script on small cards so that you have the words in front of you instead of having to turn around to read the slides. 2. Rehearse your presentation. 3. Practice presenting as your PowerPoint is being shown. This will give you the opportunity to rehearse what you want to say as each slide is shown.
