The dance craze of 1960! ● The Twist was created by Chubby Checker on August 1, 1960. ● When the song was played on “The Dick Clark Show” it became really popular. ● It remained on the top of the U.S. Pop chart for eighteen weeks. ● Then it got back on the charts for 21 weeks in 1961.

The president born in 1961! ● Barrack Obama was born on August 4th, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. ● His father left him and his mother (Ann Dunham) when he was only two years old. ● He lived in Indonesia for eight years, then moved back to Honolulu and lived with his grandparents. ● He was elected president in 2008.

The start of Nike, 1962! ● Phil Hampson Knight created the Nike company in 1962. ● He made his first running shoe the same year his company started. ● He teamed up with his College coach Bill Bowerman. ● Their main goal was to make the shoes meet the athlete's needs.

“Where the wild things are” book released, 1963! ● “Where the wild things are” was published in 1963 and written by Maurice Sendak. ● The book won the Caldecott medal in 1964. ● The award was for most distinguished book of the year. ● The movie came out for the book in 2009.

Alaska's earthquake of 1964! ● On march 27th, 1964 at 5:36 pm an earthquake of a 9.2 magnitude hit. ● It is the second largest earthquake in the world. ● The epicenter was in Prince William Sound. ● Damage covered 130,000 kilometers from the epicenter.

Cigarette ads banned in 1965! ● In 1965, ads for cigarettes were taken off of TV, magazines, etc. ● The Federal Cigarette Labeling Company created what's called an Advertising Act. ● The Advertising Act only allowed health warnings on the back of cigarette packs. ● Overall, 42.4% of people smoked in 1965.

Walt Disney's death in 1966! ● Walt Disney was born on December 1st, 1901. ● He was born in Chicago, Illinois and died in Glendale, California. ● He died in December of 1966 of lung cancer.

The Mars company releases Twix in 1967! ● The Twix bar was first released to the U.K. In 1967. ● The Mars company is located in Virginia and was ran by Frank C. Mars and his wife Ethel Mars. ● They have also made the candies M&M's, Snickers, and Milky Way.

The Winter Olympics of 1968! ● The Winter Olympics were held on February 5th, 1968 in Grenoble, France. ● 1,159 athletes came to compete in 35 differnet sports. ● The final day of the Olympics were February 8th.

Apollo 9 takes off in 1969! ● In 1969 at 11:00 am on March 3 rd Apollo takes off to space. ● James Mcdivitt, David Scott, and Russel Schweickart were on the rocket. ● They were gone for ten days and eleven hours.
