Bones have scientific names. For example the skull is known as the cranium and the breastbone is known as the sternum Think, Pair, Share How many bones can you name ?

Skeleton The skeleton has four main functions: support – provides a framework which supports the body movement – muscles attach to the skeleton and cause movement when they contract protection – protects many vital organs making blood cells

Making blood cells There are different kinds of blood cells, including: red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body in the blood white blood cells, which are involved in destroying harmful microorganisms in your body These cells are made in the bone marrow. This is soft tissue inside our larger bones which is protected by the hard part of the bone which surrounds it.

Task Complete the comprehension worksheet- Answers in FULL sentences Write a paragraph to explain the main functions of the skeleton. Give examples and use the scientific names for the bones. Why might humans have very dense, strong bones filled with marrow while other animals, like birds, have hollow bones that contribute less to body functions? What is the value in this?
