FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 6 How We Work: Food Distribution We Secure Donations The Feeding America network secures donations from national and local retailers, food companies and government agencies. We Move Food The Feeding America network of food banks moves donated food and grocery products to where they are needed most. We Safely Store and Distribute Donations Member food banks ensure the safe storage and reliable distribution of donated goods to local charitable feeding programs. We Feed People in Need Food banks provide food and grocery items to people in need at food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs, senior centers and emergency shelters.

FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 16 Hunger in America is a series of quadrennial studies that provides comprehensive demographic profiles of people seeking food assistance through the Feeding America network and the response of the hunger-relief system in meeting their needs. Hunger in America 2014 is the 6 th study in this series. It is also the largest, most comprehensive study of its kind, ever conducted in the United States. The 2014 study was conducted by Westat and the Urban Institute, leaders in the research industry, and was also peer reviewed by Feeding America’s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and national experts. FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 20 How Food Banks Support Client Health: This research will help us develop specific, targeted interventions to help clients live healthy, more stable lives. It is the first randomized controlled trial conducted by Feeding America. It quantifies the effectiveness of food bank interventions on health outcomes for adults living with diabetes. Research Objective: Evaluate the effectiveness of using food banks to identify food-insecure clients with uncontrolled diabetes and provide structured interventions

FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 21 JULY 2015 - JUNE 2017 National Partners: Dr. Hilary Seligman and her research team at the University of California, San Francisco’s Center for Vulnerable Populations; and the Urban Institute. Three member food banks participating in the multi-site research trial. 720 clients with a new or pre-existing diagnosis of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes who visit food pantries Fifty percent of study participants randomized to receive the six-month intervention immediately (intervention group). The remaining participants (control group) will receive the intervention after receiving traditional pantry services for a six-month waiting period.

By working with partners both locally and nationally and across business, nonprofit and government sectors, we can help people build a pathway out of poverty and help families achieve more stable lives.

FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 23 Client Engagement Client Data Tracking Initiative: A three-year project with the goal of facilitating consistency across the network by creating a national framework that includes guidelines and recommendations for food banks that collect client level data through their agencies and programs Teens & Food Insecurity Study: 3-phase study that includes focus groups with teens about food insecurity in 10 communities across the country; the design of a teen-friendly food intervention in Portland, OR, by teens; and the implementation and evaluation of said program followed by dissemination of findings. Pathways for Community Voices: Pilot testing and scaling client feedback loops between food banks, partner agencies and the people we serve.

FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 25 Research Partnerships Feeding America, in cooperation with The University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research (UKCPR), will competitively award grants to qualified individuals to provide rigorous research that utilizes Map the Meal Gap (MMG) November 2015: The Longitudinal Planning Project expert convening in Washington, D.C. September 2014: Expert convening on food insecurity to review the state of data insights in our sector and to help craft a long-term strategy for moving toward measurable client outcomes.

FEEDING AMERICA | RESEARCH BRIEFING | 28 The intervention will include four core elements: 1.Point-of-care HbA1c testing to screen for undiagnosed diabetes among clients with no reported diabetes history, and monitor glycemic control among those clients with previously diagnosed type 2 diabetes 2.Collaboration with local community health clinics to allow prompt primary care referrals from the food pantries 3.Biweekly food boxes over the six-month intervention period containing diabetes-appropriate foods and fresh produce 4.Diabetes self-management education, including written materials, group classes and one-on-one reinforcement of diabetes self-care behaviors
