The Good: Manufacture and export increases! Canada makes money supplying Goods and Raw Materials needed for war. Role of Women changes Women become more involved in Economy and gain right to vote

The Bad Huge Casualties Not good for a country that has been trying to increase its population. Cost a lot of money! In order to pay for the war, Canada had to turn to: –Income tax –Victory Bonds –Borrowing

Bad continued Halifax Disaster: Collision of two ships produced the largest explosion the world would see until the first atomic bomb. Killed between 2 and 3 thousand and hurt 10,000 more. Destroyed much of the city.

THE UGLY CONSCRIPTION CRISIS Prime Min. Borden had promised no conscription After Vimy, Borden promised Britain more men. Introduced Military Service Act

Opposition to the Act o French Canadians Why not?? o Farmers in the Prairies: o Needed the manpower o Industrial workers o Wanted to keep job o Felt they were already helping o Resource workers o Already struggling to support their families

Conscription Pro Conscription Union Govt. wins 1917 election. Still protests against conscription Very unpopular in Quebec 404000 called up 380500 applied for exemption 25000 conscripted soldiers made it to France before end of war.
