Germany pre and post WW1 Lesson Objective: - To evaluate the overall impact of WW1 on the German people and politics.

What was Germany like before 1914? A relatively new unified country – following victory in Franco- Prussian war in 1871 principalities like Prussia & Bavaria were united into single German country Militarily strong – The German army was seen as powerful and very important to society. Independent. Recent Industrial expansion – rivalling GB in production of coal, steel & iron and a leading industrial nation Colonial- a growing empire stretching across Europe and Africa Expanding overseas trade – 400% (1871-1914) Ruled by Kaiser Wilhelm II

The German Constitution in 1914 Kaiser Wilhelm II (hereditary monarch) calls/dismisses appoints controls Government Chancellor Ministers Reichstag (elected) which can stop laws proposed by the government, but cannot make laws. Electors Men over 25 can vote The Army Why do you think some people opposed the Kaiser? Any other concerns? Objective: Understand the impact of WW1 on Germany.

Consider… What do you know about the “Home Front” in Britain during WW1? How similar do you think the home front in Germany would have been? What do you think would have been the response of the British public if they had been defeated?

The impact of the First World War on Germany. When Germany went to war most people were confident of a victory. The war was to have economic, social and political effects on the German people and Government. Activity Use page 10-11 of white SHP text book to create a spider diagram to show these effects.
