SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES Day 1 (4 April)

ACTIVITIES Opening Ceremonies Country Presentations “Foundation” Session  Interoperability 101  Standards 101  Enterprise Architecture 101

OPENING CEREMONIES Speeches and introduction of participants Two important questions answered: 1. Why are we having this workshop? 2. What do we expect to get out of this workshop?

What do we expect to get out of this workshop? Learn from the experiences of other countries and experts in system design, interoperability, enterprise architecture and development of standards To be able to identify various options which countries can consider in determining the most appropriate models and methodology to use in developing their road maps and strategic plans for the improvement and strengthening of their health information systems and its components

COUNTRY PRESENTATIONS 1 (Vietnam) + 8 (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Philippines) + 1 (Bangladesh) Current status and activities Problems encountered Lessons learned Plans for the future

Areas of interoperability and standardization identified in country presentations Governance  Legal basis for interoperability and implementation of standards  Who owns the data? Who can access the data?  Need for a feasible strategic plan Technical Working Group  Composition  Roles; Terms of reference

Areas of interoperability and standardization identified in country presentations Databases  Very vertical; individual kingdoms; islands of information  problems with data exchange  duplication  need for integration/harmonization  individual vs aggregate  Preparation of Data Dictionaries Patient Identification  How to set-up patient ID system  Existence of other ID systems (ex. Security)

Areas of interoperability and standardization identified in country presentations Data quality and use  ensuring accuracy and reliability of data coming from lower levels  develop capacity to correct/update data online  defining use of data at different levels and corresponding data needs

Areas of interoperability and standardization identified in country presentations Indicators  Identification of core indicators  Definitions/formulas Infrastructure  Appropriateness  User-friendly

Areas of interoperability and standardization identified in country presentations Capacity building  What capacity needs to be built?  Need for professionals with both health and IT background  use of telemedicine
