The Book of James II #ActiveFaith

Why all this talk about wisdom? The Bible is not just ONE book, it is sixty six books written over the course of 1,500 years Written by authors inspired in their writing and thinking by the Holy Spirit The Bible books are are works of literature composed of various literary devices (i.e. language, plots, settings, protagonists, antagonists, metaphors, similes, double entendres, etc. Several genres determined by the content (Law, History, Poetry, Gospels, Epistles, Prophecy, Apocalyptic, and Wisdom) Historical and Cultural Context

Wisdom Literature Wisdom Literature focuses on questions about the meaning of life (Job, Ecclesiastes), practical living, and common, or more appropriately holy, sense (Proverbs and some Psalms ). This literature challenges us to reconcile our thoughts as well as actions to God's righteousness, truth, and way. James primary concern is emphasis on practical daily obedience, i.e. active faith in Christ; concern is not doctrinal (assumes the basics) but ethical

Quick Facts Purpose: To expose hypocritical practices and teach right Christian behavior Author: James, son of Joseph and half brother of Jesus, also known as “James the Just”; a Church Leader in Jerusalem; Strict Jew; even so supported Paul’s ministry to the Gentiles (Acts 21:17-26); Martyred in A.D. 62. Audience: First-century Jewish Christians residing in Gentile communities outside Palestine, and to all Christians everywhere Date Written: Probably A.D. 49, prior to the Jerusalem council held in A.D. 50 Setting: This letter expresses James’s concern for persecuted Christians who were once part of the Jerusalem church. Key Verse: “But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works” (2:18)

Themes Living Faith: contrasts empty faith (claims without conduct) with faith that works. Commitment to love and serve others is evidence of true faith. Seek ways of putting your faith to work. Trials: Successfully overcoming these adversities produces maturity and strong character. Do not resent trouble when they come. Pray for wisdom. God will supply all you need to face persecution or adversity (i.e., patience, strength) Law of Love: We are saved by God’s gracious mercy, not by keeping the law. But Christ gave us a special command: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mt 19:19) Keeping the law of love shows that our faith is vital and real (i.e., overcoming selfishness)

Themes Wise Speech: Wisdom shows itself in wise speech. Ultimately, God holds us responsible for the results our words. Accepting God’s wisdom will affect our speech. Think before you speak and allow God to give you self-control. Wealth: Christians are not to compromise with worldly attitudes about wealth. Because the glory of wealth fades, Christians should store up God’s treasures through sincere service. Christians must not show partiality to the wealthy or be prejudiced against the poor.

Food for Thought Is it harder to go through tough times for yourself, or watch someone you love go through hard times? Who is your favorite underdog?

Genuine Religion (Faith and Endurance) How is it possible to rejoice in difficult circumstances? What is the big challenge here to Christians facing doubt? In your opinion, what would a brother in humble circumstances have to take boast in? What is low about a rich man’s position? How is the birth process an apt metaphor to distinguish the source, the steps and the end result of temptation? How does one go about resisting temptation?
