2
Computer Basics 2 What is a computer? Computer It is an electronic device created to enable users to input, manipulate, store, and output information. What can we do? write letters, create pictures, make calculations, play games, and send electronic mail (e-mail)

4
Computer Basics Hardware Needs Software to Work Hardware –Physical components of the computer (monitor, keyboard, memory chips, hard drive) Software –Set of instructions that directs hardware to accomplish a task
5
Computer Basics 5 Where are they? cash registers, gas pumps, cameras, cars, homes, stereos, and even toys. Type of computers (at home or work ) single user (at a time) PCs, microcomputers, workstations, laptops, desktops smart phones tablets
6
Computer Basics 6 How do computers work? They still rely on people for instructions A computer stores temporary data such as keyboard characters in its RAM chips. RAM is: A computer's temporary, yet primary workspace, and manipulates data at very high speeds Data on RAM, can be processed by the computer's CPU Data Process Information InputOutput CPU RAM How do computers work?
7
Computer Basics 7 What is computer data? Data Data refers to any information that goes into or is taken from the computer. Anything we put into the computer is "data," what we get out of the computer is "information."
8
Computer Basics 8 What are the basic parts of a computer?
9
Computer Basics Functions of the Microcomputer
10
Computer Basics 10 Computer's basic parts Input devices Input devices are the pathways through which information enters to a computer's system unit. Devices used for entering data into a computer keyboard, scanner, mouse, and digitizer tablet joystick microphone
11
Computer Basics 11 Computer's basic parts Output device When a computer completes a computation, the resulting data is sent to an output device. Any internal or peripheral device attached to the system unit allowing the user to view results Examples: Printers Monitors Speakers Digital projectors
12
Computer Basics 12 What are peripherals? Hardware devices connected to a computer Enhance a computer's functions, or add a new service or additional data resource devices can be either input or output devices. Examples CD ROM drive Speakers Modem External Drive Unit Floppy drive Smart Card Readers http://www.gemplus.com/products/hardware/gcr410.htm http://www.gemplus.com/products/hardware/gcr410.htm http://www.gemplus.com/products/hardware/gempcTouch440.htm Peripherals
