9 Ethnocentric Stages Denial: People of other cultures, insofar as they’re noticed at all, seem less human. Defense: Aware of other cultures around them, but with a relatively incomplete understanding and probably fairly strong negative feelings or stereotypes about some of them. Minimization: People from other cultures are pretty much like me, under the surface.

10 © 2012 Boise State University Ethnorelative Stages Acceptance: See your own culture as just one of many ways of experiencing the world. Adaptation. Able to “take the perspective” of another culture to understand or evaluate situations. Integration. To varying extents, has integrated more than one cultural perspective, mindset, and behavior into one’s identity and worldview.
