4 Close Reading Reread the chunk of text from our story “Exploring the Titanic” and answer the questions that follow. Use information that you read as EVIDENCE in your writing so that you can support what you have to say. Questions: How did Phillips respond to the warnings from the Californian? What factors probably contributed to him responding that way?

5 Timeline Review: DO you have everything so far? Get out your timeline. Check to see that you have all events up through page 109 documented. Questions: a. Looking at the timeline, where did we leave off? b. How many opportunities do you see where someone could have prevented the collision?

6 What will happen to the Titanic? Turn to page 110 in the BIG RED TEXTBOOK During Reading: Record events on timeline. Pay attention to how people are impacted by their environments. Be ready to read and take notes. Participate in discussions.

8 Timeline Quotes Activity Directions: Cut out the quotes. Add quotes to the timeline in the correct places using a glue stick. How do you know where to put them? 1. Read the quote. 2. Look for evidence on the timeline that seems to “go with” the quote (similar topic/words). 3. Consider chronological order. Hint** - check boxes for size… quote boxes match up

9 Ticket Time: Reading Closure Complete your Reading Ticket by answer the following questions in writing. Consider the individuals who made no attempt to save themselves because they felt their duty to do otherwise… For example: Harold Bride and Jack Phillips or the band… Pick one of those examples. Why do you think they stayed? Why didn’t they attempt to be rescued from the start of this disaster? What purpose did they serve?

10 Vocabulary Slap Game Your team will decide if the word is used correctly or not. Slap THUMBS UP (like) if it is correct. Slap THUMBS DOWN (dislike) if it is not correctly used. Do not hit anything other than the board… First person to choose correctly, gets the point for the team.
