Major Routes & Lead For Auto Transport Direction wise major routes fall in : North - East, North - South, North – West South –East West –South Lead wise volume% of the total auto traffic: Less than 1000km : 40% More than 1000km : 60%

Prospects for Rail Transport The production and consumption patterns are growing in such a way that there is substantial demand for transporting the automobiles from one area to other area - to a distance much beyond 500km. The present Rail Share in the automobile transportation is only about 4%.

Prospects contd. Studies have indicated that that 25% of auto traffic can be carried by Rail. Potential of approx. - Rs 2500 crore per annum rail freight against the existing Rs 100 crore per year.

Automobile Freight Train Operator Policy To meet the growing transport demand of auto industry, private investment is required to augment/supplement the logistics for it. AFTO policy (Automobile Freight Transport Operator) facilitates investment on procurement of Auto Wagons and consequently usage of IR network for meeting the transport needs of the industry.

A win -win situation for both IR as well as auto industry/logistic provider. M/s Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and M/s APL Logistics/Vascor Automotive Private Limited have been registered in this scheme. Permission has been given for induction of 12 rakes. 6 rakes procured by M/s APL logistics and 3 rakes by M/s Maruti. AFTO Contd.

Logistics & other requirements for growth of rail share Number of additional rakes for increase in rail share from 4% to 10% ----- additional 10-15 rakes For 25% rail share ------ additional 40-45 rakes Induction of smaller capacity Rakes to cater to lower volume for smaller regions.

Contd. Guaranteed transit time. Real time tracking and monitoring. Competitive freight structure. Auto hubs/ Better terminals suitable for handling automotive cargo. Safety and Security of the vehicles.

Recent Initiatives by IR Auto Hub at Walajabad Located 80 km from Chennai near the manufacturing centers of M/s Nissan, M/s Hyundai, M/s Ford etc. Handling capacity of one & half rakes Holding area of 5000sqm with capacity of more than 300 four wheelers. Fencing, High Mast Light and seamless Road Connectivity. Primarily Export traffic to Chennai & Ennore Ports.

Contd. In order to improve the availability of rake, IR is procuring 5 rakes of NMG. This will improve supply of rakes and will reduce waiting time. Another Auto terminal at Farrukh Nagar near Gurgaon is being developed to facilitate Automobile loading. Expected to start in next two months. To improve the service level by way of improved transit time, Time Table have been published for three OD pairs.

Contd. Maintenance Practice: To improve availability of rakes for loading, the examination of BCACM & BCACBM is being done on CC pattern from their respective bases at Tughlakabad/NR and Melpakkam/SR. Break Power Certificate validity increased to 7500km /30days whichever is earlier.

Contd. Modifications in the existing Design of BCACBM: 1. Deformity on Roof & Door: Roof drawing modified by providing additional cross members and door provided with additional lug. 2. Fall Plates: RDSO has incorporated the design modification in L shaped key to hold the fall plate to prevent its bending. 3. Increase in Height: The issue of increase in height is under examination by RDSO.

Strategies – Way Forward Collaborative approach between industry, logistic providers and Indian Railways - Rail transportation is definitely economical in long distance, reliable, safe, quicker and environmental friendly over road transport. More investment by Industry/Logistic providers in auto logistics particularly investment in specially designed auto wagons.

Contd. Two Wheeler segment has huge transport potential. Induction of rakes for Two Wheelers. Handling requires special arrangement which need to be developed. Better design wagons to improve loadability. Increase in height of the wagon to accommodate SUV. Development of Auto Hubs under PPP mode.

Contd. Improved services by IR – ensuring the Time Tabled and pilferage free run. IR need to further incentivize the industry for offering higher traffic volumes which arise due to more than the normal growth rate.

THANK YOU
