Freeware for GIS
2
Classification of free software ● Free for anybody (Free ware, GNU Public license) ● Free for personal use and/or for Educational institutions ● Free for limited time period (Trial ware, Shareware)
3
Availability of source code ● Source is available (Open Source Software (OSS)) – Software can be compiled for any Operational System (OS). ● Proprietary software / Closed software – porting to other platform and updates can not be done by user.
4
Functionality of the software ● Demo versions ● Limited versions – TNTmips®, MapMaker ● Data viewers – ArcExplorer, PCI FreeView ● Fully functional software – GRASS, SAGA, Quantum GIS, MultiSpec
5
Limited editions of a software
6
TNTmips® ● http://www.microimages.com/ ● ftp://ftp.microimages.com/pub/tntlite/
7
TNTmips® ● Limitations: – The size of the raster map can not exceed 314 368 pixels, longest edge can not exceed 1024 pixels, e.g., (1024 × 307, 614 × 512); – For vector layer no more than 500 polygons, 1500 lines, 1500 points, 1500 text nodes are allowed. (no limit on nodes); – TIN cannot contain more then 1500 nodes; – Database supports up to 10 tables with 1500 records.
8
MapMaker ● http://www.mapmaker.com/ ● Reduced funcionality
9
Spatial Data Viewers
10
ArcExplorer ● http://www.esri.com/ http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/ ● Three different versions – Windows binary file (not supported any more) – ArcExplorer—Java Edition – ArcExplorer—Java Edition for Education ● For each version functionality differs.
11
ArcExplorer ● Data viewing, primitive analysis and printing ● Merits: – project files can be saved – thematic mapping ● Drawbacks: – several map projections are supported only by ArcExplorer—Java Edition for Education
12
Geomatica ® FreeView ● http://www.pcigeomatics.com/ ● Merits: – a lot of file formats are supported – good for satellite images ● Drawbacks: – no project files – no thematic mapping – only one map projection
13
ERDAS ViewFinder ● http://gi.leica-geosystems.com/ bija http://www.erdas.com/ ● only for raster images ● less features then PCI Geomatica FreeView ● a plug-in exists for more raster file formats
14
Bentley View ● http://www.bentley.com/ ● Two versions: – Requires Microsoft.NET and Microsoft DirectX 9 C – Supports NT4 and Win98 (.NET and DirectX are not required) – Miscrosoft Internet Explorer 5 or newer must be installed. As the default browser another one can be used.
15
Bentley View ● The same as Microstation 8 except editing and saving possibilities. Very useful for *.dgn, *.dwg and *.dxf files. ● Raster files can be added with *.prj file ● «Bentley View» takes up approximately 150Mb disk space
16
Thuban ● http://thuban.intevation.org/ ● Interactive Geographic Data Viewer with multiprojection vector and raster data support ● Requires Python 2.3.4
17
Free fully functioning software
18
Scion Image ● http://www.scioncorp.com/ ● Good for measuring different objects in raster images ● Supports Scion Corporation Frame Grabbers.
19
MultiSpec ● http://www.ece.purdue.edu/~biehl/MultiSpec/ ● For Multispectral image (like satellite imagery) classification
20
SAGA[System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses] ● http://www.saga-gis.uni-goettingen.de/html/
21
GRASS [Geographic Resources Analysis Support System] ● http://www.cecer.army.mil/grass/ http://grass.itc.it/
22
Quantum GIS (QGIS) ● http://www.qgis.org/
23
QGIS + GRASS + PostGIS (Spatial PostgreSQL)
24
MapServer ● http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/ ● MapServer is an Open Source development environment for building spatially-enabled internet applications.
25
MapIt! ● http://www.mapit.de/ ● MapIt! is a serverside web- application for rastermaps.
