A series of collaborative lessons between STEM & German teacher. Goal: to raise awareness about our culture of consumerism and potential effects on the environment. Goethe Institut Chicago Conference in Germany around the theme of Sustainability. Currently selecting 2 nd year team of 3 year project. Coming soon…website called “Teaching sustainability” where the seminars, conference, results and the material will be. Background

FCUSD has adopted the 3-course model for high school Physics Biology Chemistry Necessitates including Earth Science standards outlined in NGSS throughout each of these classes. Standards addressed in these lessons include: HS-ESS3 Earth & Human Activity (includes Natural Resources and cost-benefit ration of mineral resources) HS-PS1-7 Conservation of Matter NGSS, CA Framework Draft & 3- course Model for Chemistry

Read the article with your group. Complete the 3-2-1 Summary in your lab journal 3 things that I learned: 2 questions I have: 1 new idea or connection I am making. After all group members are done, take turns sharing your lists. The Periodic Table’s Endangered Elements

What does sustainability mean to you? Think back to the article, are the elements being used in a sustainable way? Sustainability

How many cell phones have you had in your life? When did you first get a cell phone? Cell Phone Survey & Usage Chart
14
Are we using our cell phones sustainably?
15
1.How much time are you on the computer? Using internet/data? What do you eat on a daily basis? 2.What mode(s) of transportation do you use? 3.How frequently do you shop for clothes? Other areas to explore:
16
What are they made of? Be specific about the types of materials, the chemical composition, and where they come from in the world? How does it work? What if you had to go without it for a day? How often do you replace it? Are the materials from fair trade? What happens to it when you get a new one? What does this have to do with Chemistry or AP Environmental Science? Cell Phone Research Project
