2 MDMA was first synthesized by Merck and largely forgotten until it was re- discovered around 1965 by Alexander Shulgin MDMA is an atypical psychedelic in that it does not produce the profound sensory disturbances characteristic of “traditional” psychedelics Effects include euphoria and a deep sense of connection with others. For this reason MDMA is classified as an entactogen/empathogen MDMA’s unique effects have led to it finding limited use in psychotherapeutic settings 3,4-Methylenedioxy-N-methamphetamine

4 A few terms to get straight… Fear conditioning – An experiment in which a neutral conditional stimulus (CS) is paired with an aversive unconditional stimulus (US). Usually takes the form of a tone (CS) paired with a foot shock (US). Extinction learning – The gradual reduction in a conditioned behavior after the behavior is no longer reinforced. “Freezing” – Temporary absence of movement in response to a conditional stimulus
