1. Brief introduction to smart materials 2. Give examples of smart materials 3. Uses of smart materials
5
Materials that respond to a change of: Temperature Contact with Water Electrical current Light They usually change colour or shape.
6
Imagine:
7
There are many different types of Smart Materials..... Here are the 3 most common types.
8
Polymorph can Polymorph is a material that can be shaped and reshaped any number of times.
9
Electroluminescent sheets Electroluminescent (El) emits a soft light when in contact with light or electricity. They are very thin, almost like ribbons or sheets of paper, and they can be produced in a variety of colours
10
Thermochromic changes colour A Thermochromic material changes colour as it changes temperature.
11
Task 1 Using micro soft power point and the internet research create a power point about the below smart materials. Find out About Slide Information Shape memory alloys (SMA) Photo chromic paint Reactive Glass Thermo-chromic Polymorph Electro luminescent Lycra Kevlar Teflon Carbon nanotubes 1 slide per material Name of material Basic description of the materials (what it does, where is it used?) Images of product
12
Task 2 Using your understanding of smart materials and the mechanical properties of materials, design something to help a superhero. Ideas Things to Include? Costume, accessory, gadget, vehicle or weapon. Draw in pencil Add colour Use as many of the smart materials as possible Label all smart materials used and give reasons for your choice of material.
13
Example Mask and body armour Made from Kevlar which I durable, bullet proof and can be shaped into many different shapes. Cape can Mixture of Polymorph and electro so material can be shaped and reshaped number of times, when electricity is passed through it. Allows batman’s cape to change shape to allow him to glide. Helmet eyes Electroluminescen t (El) emits a soft light when in contact with light or electricity, to allow batman to see in the dark All materials used in the manufacture of Batman’s costume must have the mechanical properties of; 1.Hardness 2.Toughness 3.Durability.
14
Look at the items on your table. Task 3 Discuss within your group how smart materials could improve them.
15
Task 1 Using micro soft power point and the internet research create a power point about the below smart materials. Find out About Slide Information Metals Ferrous Metals – Stainless Steel and High Speed Steel. Non Ferrous – Tin and pewter Polymers (plastics) Thermoplastic – Polypropylene (PP) Polythene High Density (HDPE), Polythene Low Density (LDPE), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Nylon Thermosetting - Polyester resin (PR) and Bakelite 1 slide per material Name of material Basic description of the materials. Properties (what it does, where is it used?) Images of products
