Hydroplaning  Wet roads can cause tires to hydroplane, or ride up on a thin film of water starting at 35 mph.  How to avoid HP: Slow down, good tire condition.  If you HP: –NO Brakes –NO Gas –Firm grip on the wheel

Snow and Ice  NJ Law: Always remove snow and ice from car before driving.  During snow: get a feel for the road as soon as you start to drive by testing your brakes just to see how slippery the road actually is.

Snow and Ice  In Snow/Ice your vehicle will skid if you: –Accelerate too quickly –Turn to fast –Brake Improperly  In NJ, Snow tires are allowed between November 15 th and April 1 st

Night Driving  Factors to consider while driving at night: –Speed –Reaction Distance (Distance traveled before hitting the brake –Braking Distance (Distance needed to stop)

Night Driving  STATE EXAM: –At night, drive slow and within the range or your headlights. –You should always be able to stop within the distance you see ahead.

City Driving  When you drive in the city: –Drive Slow –Look for Pedestrians –Look at least 12 seconds ahead.

Skids  Sudden turns, lane changes, and hard braking can cause a vehicle to skid.  If you start to skid: –Take your foot off the gas –DO NOT use your brakes –Turn your wheels in the direction the back of your car is going (always turn into a skid) How to pull out of a skid – YouTube How to pull out of a skid – YouTube

Running Off the Pavement  If you start to drift off the road do not turn back on right away, this can throw the vehicle off balance. Steps: 1. Slow Down 2. Regain Control 2. Regain Control 3. Turn slowly back onto the road 3. Turn slowly back onto the road

Brake Failure  If your brakes ever fail:  Shift to a lower gear  Pump brakes as rapidly as possible (this may help to build enough brake pressure to stop.

Tire Blowout  During a tire blowout: –Hold steering wheel firmly –No gas –No brake –Slow down gradually

Reporting Accidents  If an accident involves injury, property damage, or death you must notify police.  When damage is more than $500 or if there is injury:  Send report to MVC within 10 days  Notify Insurance Co. immediately  See a doctor
