4 Steps to make sure you get the message First and foremost, stop talking! It is difficult to listen and speak at the same time.

6 The common denominator here is to stop talking and to really pay attention to the speaker and the message he or she is delivering.

7 Competitive or Combative Listening may be more interested in promoting his or her point of view instead of considering the speaker’s thoughts. Passive or Attentive Listening listener is sincerely interested and actively listening; but fails to take action by summarizing or verifying

8 Active or Reflective Listening the listener is genuinely interested is active in summarizing or verifying verify the message by repeating it to the speaker. make notes throughout the day assign a level that reflects how effective you think your listening was in each u the end of the week, take weekly score write down where and what you think you could have done better. Give yourself an overall weekly score.

9 Three different types or levels of communication are: Facts Thoughts/Beliefs Feelings/Emotions

10 Paraphrasing and Summarizing Rewrite the message in your own words (paraphrase) Write the main points of the message (summarize)

11 When paraphrasing strive to: Repeat the facts Share the thoughts and beliefs you heard Convey any underlying feelings and emotions you believe are involved Take the time to communicate the message sender’s wants, needs and expectations

12 Avoid Be wary of rehearsing what you might want to say before you say it Be careful about judging the sender and the message too early Arguing too early may convey that you are disagreeable Everyone wants to be right,Yet, being right is not nearly as important as being informed. Lastly, do not pretend to be listening.
