1 2016-2017: A SEASON OF CELEBRATION

2 This year, the orchestra returns to its home in the newly renovated Johnson Fine Arts Center for its 97 th season of music making.

3 Music Director Robert Vodnoy is the Music Director of this 50-member college-community orchestra. This is his 12 th year at Northern State University, where he teaches music history and applied strings and string methods. He also teaches introduction to arts management. Vodnoy brings 40 years of national and international experience as a professional conductor to the orchestra.

4 The string studio at NSU. Students from around the world!

5 The 50-member AUCS has student, faculty, and community members.

6 The orchestra rehearses on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 in the JFAC.

7 The orchestra sponsors an annual concerto/aria competition. Students from NSU are eligible to compete, and the winners perform with the orchestra.

8 Internationally acclaimed violinist Lee-Chin Siouw will perform The Butterfly Lovers Concerto with the orchestra on November 12, 2016. http://www.leechin.com/

9 Lee-Chin has performed at spectacular events around the world.

10 This will be the first concert by a major NSU ensemble in the JFAC auditorium! The November program includes:  Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture to celebrate the spectacular renovation.  The Butterfly Lovers Concerto, the greatest piece of 20 th century Chinese music.  Brahms’ Song of Destiny, performed with the NSU Concert Choir and a community chorus, prepared by Dr. Timothy Woods

11 Among many awards, Lee-Chin won the Gold Medal at the Henryk Szeryng International Violin Competition in1994. She is a distinguished author and pedagogue.

12 Winter Concert The February program includes:  Winners of the 2016 Concerto/Aria Competition  Robert Schumann’s glorious Symphony No. 4, a romantic masterpiece. The symphony features the beautiful “Clara” theme, with which the composer professed his love for his wife Clara, one of the greatest pianists of the 19 th century.

13 Spring Concert The Final Concert of the season features Kenneth Boulton, the Dean of the School of Fine Arts, new clarinet assistant professor Audrey Miller and the NSU Concert Choir for a truly grand finale!

14 The Friends of the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony This community board supports the orchestra through its program book With Strings Attached, and by obtaining concert sponsors.
