ENGINEERING FIELDS

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Biomedical engineers analyze and design solutions to problems in biology and medicine, with the goal of improving the quality and effectiveness of patient care. (Source: http://www.bls.gov/ooh/architecture-and- engineering/biomedical-engineers.htm)

EXAMPLE OF A BIOMEDICAL PROJECT: The Department of Biomedical Engineering has worked on creating artificial organs. (Source: http://www.lerner.ccf.org/bme/about/) (Source: http://techtechboom.com/bioartificial-organs-could- solve-the-lack-of-donors.html)

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING "Mechanical engineering is a diverse subject that derives its breadth from the need to design and manufacture everything from small individual parts and devices (e.g., microscale sensors and inkjet printer nozzles) to large systems (e.g., spacecraft and machine tools). The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. In order to accomplish this, a broad range of skills are needed." 7 ROBOTICS ENGINEER A Robotics engineer is a behind-the-scenes designer, who is responsible for creating robots and robotic systems that are able to perform duties that humans are either unable or prefer not to complete. Through their creations, a robotics engineer helps to make jobs safer, easier, and more efficient, particularly in the manufacturing industry." -https://www.sokanu.com/careers/robotics-engineer/

UGV NERVA

COMPUTER ENGINEERING Computer engineering refers to the study that integrates electronic engineering with computer sciences to design and develop computer systems and other technological devices. Computer engineering professionals have expertise in a variety of diverse areas such as software design, electronic engineering and integrating software and hardware.

CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. Civil engineers are involved in the design and build of: Highways, bridges and tunnels Schools, hospitals, airports and other buildings Sewage systems and water treatment facilities

ENGINEERING FIELD ASSIGNMENT What area of engineering interests you most? Do a little research and pick one. This could be a broad field like Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, etc., or something specialized like Robotic, Mechatronic, Marine, etc. Respond to this forum with two things: A definition (with a source--provide a link) for what that field or subfield encompasses; An interesting example to share with the class to show something that kind of engineer might do. The example should be very visual--so either an example with good pictures or an example video. You can't use an example that's already been posted here by a classmate. We will go over these in class Thursday. Due by the start of class Thursday 8/27. 10 points in the Engineering category.
