Bottle Rocket Project - Materials Per group (no more than 3 people per group), you will need: – 2 plastic 2-liter bottles (empty and rinsed out) – 2 plastic folders – A roll of duct tape or reinforced packing tape – About a cup of rice (UNCOOKED) in a “zip-lock” bag

Number 1 Magnet – any material that contains iron, nickel, or cobalt and it attracted to materials containing iron, nickel, or cobalt

Number 2 Pole – the part of a magnet where the magnetic effects are strongest

Number 3 Solenoid – coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when carrying an electric current

Number 4 Electromagnet – a solenoid with an iron core in the center

Number 5 Electromagnetic induction – producing electric current by a changing magnetic field

Number 6 Generator – device that uses electromagnetic induction to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy

Number 7 Electric Motor – a device that uses electrical energy to do work

Number 8 Transformer – a device that increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current

Number 9 Electromagnetism – the interaction between electricity and magnetism

Number 10 Electric power – the rate at which energy is used to do work; expressed in watts (W)

Magnetic Fields Draw the magnetic field on your worksheet.

Magnetic Fields Draw the magnetic field on your worksheet.

Magnetic Fields Draw the magnetic field on your worksheet.

Magnetic Fields What would happen to the magnetic field lines as the N and S poles get closer together?

Magnetic Fields Draw the solenoid on your worksheet?

Solenoid How can they be made stronger? Increase the number of coils Increase the current

Electromagnet How can they be made stronger? Increase the number of coils Increase the current Increase the size of the iron core

Generator Draw the generator on your worksheet. Mechanical (Kinetic) Energy in Coils of wire Electrical Energy out Magnet

Electric Motor An electric motor is the opposite of a generator. Mechanical (Kinetic) Energy out Coils of wire Electrical Energy in Magnet

Transformer Draw the following transformer. More turns, higher voltage Fewer turns, lower voltage
