1
Hydrocarbons Saturated Hydrocarbons – Only have single bonds Another name is alkane The alkanes hold the maximum number of hydrogen per carbon atom.
2
3 Types of Saturated Hydrocarbons 1) Straight chains – Ex: Butane C 4 H 10 2) Branched chains 3) Rings -Ex: Isobutane C 4 H 10 -Ex: Cyclopentane & Cyclohexane
3
Isomers Did you notice Butane and Isobutane both had the formula C 4 H 10 ? An isomer is a compound with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas.
4
Unsaturated Hydrocarbons when hydrocarbons have one or more multiple bonds. If it has double bonds it is called an alkene Ex: Ethene If it has triple bonds it is called an alkyne Ex: Ethyne
5
Common Hydrocarbon Prefixes The prefix added to ane, ene or yne tells the number of carbon atoms in the compound. 1 = meth 2 = eth 3 = prop 4 = but 5 = pent ane = single bond ene = double bond yne = triple bond
