MONDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2012 Group the objects on the desk based on properties of your choosing

Taxonomy: History OBJ: Define taxonomy as a branch of Biology that groups names and organisms based on studies of their different characteristics OBJ: Describe primitive classification system of Aristotle OBJ: Describe binomial nomenclature system created by Linnaeus to classify organisms by physical/structural similarities

Taxonomy and Classification Classification The grouping of objects or information Taxonomy The branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics

Aristotle and Taxonomy Created a primitive system of taxonomy in which organisms were classified as plants or animals

Linnaeus and Taxonomy Binomial nomenclature Two names A system in which organisms are classified by scientific names: 1 st word Genus, 2 nd word Species (Homo sapiens)

Species

Genus Group of closely related species Included in the scientific name Sometimes the common name

Family Genera that share many characteristics

Order Taxonomic category composed of similar families

Class Similar characteristics Example: Mammalia = warm blooded animals, body hair, produce milk

Phylum Many different organisms that share important characteristics

Kingdom Largest and most inclusive

Homework: How are living things organized for study? Describe the system for naming species that Linnaeus developed. What are the 7 taxonomic categories or Linnaeus’s classification system? Rank them in order from largest level to the smallest. Why do scientists avoid using common names when discussing organisms?

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 Take out your homework and discuss with those sitting by you

Species Species = organism that can interbreed and successfully produce fertile offspring Barriers: -Physical -Location

Taxonomy: Classification OBJ: Identify and define the kingdoms or classification OBJ: Create a dichotomous key in order to classify an organism OBJ: Classify an organism using its scientific name

Kingdoms of classification Mosses, Ferns, Flowers Sponges Worms mammals Mushrooms yeasts Amoeba, giant kelp Halophiles, methanogens E. coli, Strept.

Dichotomous Key

Using and Constructing a Classification Key Worksheet
